Inspired by the first transatlantic satellite communication, Joe Meek’s spacey masterpiece was a #1 hit worldwide in 1962. True to Meek’s original, instruments are heavily layered, though here they are primarily guitars rather than keyboards, with the Moog Guitar being particularly in character. Also true to Meek’s original, compression, equalization, spring reverb, and tape echo are employed with abandon. Dig the uniquely quirky pedal-steel lines on the first chorus.

Mark Wingfield is always recommended listening for fans of Jazz or Fusion guitar (among the names usually dropped you'll find Alan Holdsworth, Terje Rypdal, Pat Metheny). Nevertheless, this isn't just pure Jazz. I seem to hear more traces of progressive rock than in his other recordings, but probably that's just an early impression... Carsten Pieper
